Neighbors in the quiet suburb of Pacifica, California, are still trying to piece together just what happened days after a deadly attack by a pit bull terrier, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
The male owner of the animal told authorities he left his wife in bed asleep with the dog at around 8:00 AM that morning, and arrived to the bloody scene just after noon. He immediately called 911, and authorities believe he then wrangled the dog into another room. Witnesses stated seeing and hearing the man screaming, covered in his wife’s blood. Shortly after, as rescue crews and police arrived, authorities say the dog charged at them, forcing them to shoot the animal, a charge the male owner adamantly denies. The female owner was declared dead at the scene.
Although a majority of the population likely believes the myth that most severe and fatal dog attacks are by pit bulls, all statistics on breed specific dog bites and attacks have been dismissed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), citing unreliable data sources. The organization does not support breed specific bans because of this. What most people can agree upon is that negligent owners who cannot control their animals are the cause of most attacks.
