Plane Hits Car After Crash Landing

August 29, 2011

A small plane crashed into a car on an adjacent highway after failing at a landing attempt and skidding off the runway and onto the road. The CBS-San Francisco article detailing the story stated two individuals riding in the car were injured in the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration found that the small plane experienced loss of power while still in the air. As the single-engine aircraft glided toward Earth, the pilot was forced to attempt to land the plane with it’s landing gear still up. He guided the plane onto with the runway, but soon lost control of the aircraft. It skidded onto a nearby highway and struck a car from behind. No one aboard the plane suffered any injuries, but two passengers in the vehicle were hurt. They were transported to the local hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The California Auto Accident Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers say the best way to keep you and your family safe from seemingly unavoidable incidents is to drive defensively and eliminate all distractions while behind the wheel. Alameda Probation Officer Charged In Death Of Cyclist

August 22, 2011

Charges have been filed against an Alameda County probation officer following a tragic auto accident, when the officer hit and killed a cyclist. An article by CBS-San Francisco stated the officer has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for her part in the crash.

The accident occurred on June 15 in Castro Valley, California, along Fairmont Drive. It was just after 9:30 AM when the 32-year-old female officer was heading east in her Honda Civic along the winding road. She spilled her drink in her lap and looked down while maneuvering a turn, allowing the car to drift toward the shoulder of the road and into the path of the 53-year-old cyclist who was sharing the lane. At the point of impact, the biker rolled onto the hood of the Civic and struck his head on the windshield before falling into the roadway. Although the man was wearing a helmet, he suffered major trauma and was pronounced dead at the nearby Eden Medical Center.

The officer faces a maximum sentence in the case of up to one year in county jail on the charges.

Pit Bull Kills Pregnant Pacifica Woman

August 15, 2011

Neighbors in the quiet suburb of Pacifica, California, are still trying to piece together just what happened days after a deadly attack by a pit bull terrier, according to the San Francisco Examiner.

The male owner of the animal told authorities he left his wife in bed asleep with the dog at around 8:00 AM that morning, and arrived to the bloody scene just after noon. He immediately called 911, and authorities believe he then wrangled the dog into another room. Witnesses stated seeing and hearing the man screaming, covered in his wife’s blood. Shortly after, as rescue crews and police arrived, authorities say the dog charged at them, forcing them to shoot the animal, a charge the male owner adamantly denies. The female owner was declared dead at the scene.

Although a majority of the population likely believes the myth that most severe and fatal dog attacks are by pit bulls, all statistics on breed specific dog bites and attacks have been dismissed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), citing unreliable data sources. The organization does not support breed specific bans because of this. What most people can agree upon is that negligent owners who cannot control their animals are the cause of most attacks.

Contact the California Dog Bite Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers if you have been bitten. They may be able to help you hold the animal’s owner responsible for its actions and collect compensation for the injuries you sustained.

Former Employees Blow The Whistle Before And After Gas Leak Explosion

August 8, 2011

Several former employees of the utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), have come forward to tell the public about how the company ignored repeated warnings of safety hazards concerning the integrity of gas lines throughout San Bruno, California, prior to an explosion last year that killed eight people, injured dozens, and left 55 home uninhabitable.

A gas-crew welding foreman told The Oakland Tribune, he missed out on high-paying overtime hours after telling the company’s Manager of Investigations of “potentially explosive gas leaks” and falsified records. The Manager of Investigations was subsequently laid off after taking the findings of unfixed gas leaks, which were claimed to be fixed or to not exist at all, to PG&E higher-ups. He sued PG&E for wrongful termination in 2008, but the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum days after the filing was made.

A union safety official was also threatened with his job by PG&E executives after bringing to light dangerous working conditions for employees of the company. Allegedly, two PG&E supervisors detained him in a hotel room overnight, threatened to fire him, and made him submit to a psychiatric exam. According to a lawsuit filed against PG&E, he was found to be “mentally fit, except for anxiety that was attributable to his having been severely mistreated by PG&E.”

The California Injury Lawyers with Berg Injury Law may be able to help you settle your case if you have been hurt while on the job at no fault of your own.

Berkeley Police Conduct Special Enforcement Operation for Motorcycle Safety

August 1, 2011

Police in the city of Berkeley, California (BPD) held a special traffic enforcement operation Saturday, focusing on the safety of motorcyclists along the state’s roadways. In order to reduce the number of motorcycle accidents, which often cause death or injuries, patrols were stationed in areas known to be prone to more frequent motorcycle accidents.

In these targeted areas, officers watch both vehicles and motorcyclists for violation of safety regulations, such as speeding, unsafe turning, and driving under the influence.

These special patrols were funded by Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety. These grants allow selected departments to purchase new equipment to educate the public on safety and enforce safety laws.

Officers say the best way for motorcycle enthusiasts to educate themselves is to attend one of the state’s rider training courses, which focus on safe handling and proper maneuvering of the bike, as well as special laws pertaining to motorcycles. More information on the programs can be found at www.CA-msp.org or by calling 1-877-RIDE. The organization responsible for the training, the California Motorcyclist Safety Program, has their annual Advisory Committee Meeting scheduled for later this month, and will discuss the current state of the program and future endeavors the group may get involved in.

California Motorcycle Accident Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers understand the importance of these programs, as California ranks in the top three states for motorcycle fatalities. Founding attorney William Berg discusses the common causes and effects of California motorcycle accidents in a recent interview.
