San Francisco Bicyclist Dies After Collision with Delivery Truck

July 25, 2011

A bicyclist who was involved in a crash with a delivery truck Wednesday morning died yesterday from injuries sustained in the accident. ABC 7 News reported that the 25-year-old San Francisco woman was traveling eastbound on Mission Street and was struck by the westbound traveling delivery truck as she attempted to turn left onto Fremont Street. Both she and the truck driver had green lights; however, the bicyclist’s turn was illegal as only taxicabs and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency buses are allowed to turn left at the location.

According to San Francisco Police spokesman Lt. Troy Dangerfield, the woman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and suffered a serious head wound along with other injuries. She was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where she died Sunday.

Several campaigns in the city are aimed at educating cyclists on proper methods, techniques, and etiquette for riding on the road. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition offers courses and training in urban biking for novices and beginners.  These courses will teach riders everything they need to know, from the laws of the road they must abide to, to gear shifting techniques on tough hills.

The California Bicycle Accident Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers suggest cyclists educate themselves on safe, smart riding, and encourage them to always wear a helmet. These are the best ways to protect yourself on the road.

UCSF Shuttle Crash Kills Associate Professor

July 18, 2011

According to CBS-San Francisco, a collision between a University of California-San Francisco shuttle bus and a tractor-trailer has raised questions as to whether or not seat belts should be required on buses and other passenger transportation vehicles.

The shuttle was traveling east on Oak Street through an intersection with Octavia Boulevard around 6:20 AM, taking the professor and 15 other passengers to work at San Francisco General Hospital. According to witness reports, the shuttle driver ran a red light and struck an 18-wheeler. An associate professor with the university was declared dead at the scene after being ejected from the bus and run over by the 18-wheeler. Four others were also injured, and transported to San Francisco General to be treated for their injuries. They were last listed in fair condition.

The bus driver has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the crash. Many feel the use of seat belts would have saved a life and prevented several trips to the hospital following this crash. According to the law, a vehicle carrying 10 passengers or more is not required to have seat belts. UCSF spokeswoman Elizabeth Fernandez states the university’s 50 shuttles each carry around 22 people, and therefore meet that requirement.

Laws do not always protect people from injuries. If you or someone you know sustained injuries in an accident involving a commercial vehicle, the California Truck Accident Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers may be able to help you collect compensation for your injuries.

Alameda Firefighters Trained in Water Rescue Following Tragedy

July 11, 2011

Twenty Alameda firefighters have been trained in water rescue and another 16 are slated for training following the Memorial Day drowning of a man at Robert Crown Memorial State Beach, where rescuers’ hands were tied by department policy.

Firerescue1.com reported that interim Chief Mike D’Orazi calls the new water rescue unit “a work in progress,” with specialized water and equipment training planned through the fall. The department’s new 14-foot rescue vessel will be operational by September 1st. With an overwhelming number of firefighters volunteering for the training, classes will run at least until the beginning of October.

The city’s policy on water rescue underwent serious evaluation following the drowning. D’Orazi immediately changed department policy to allow a senior firefighter at the scene to use their discretion to determine if a water rescue would be attempted. Mayor Marie Gilmour has also asked the fire marshal to conduct a full investigation of the events leading up to the drowning, and the decisions of different officials and departments which may have allowed the tragedy to occur.

Firework Safety Vital for Alameda County

July 4, 2011

With today being our country’s Independence Day, many people in Alameda County are scouring out locations that will be suitable for their own personal fireworks display. The heat that has recently dried out the area, combined with the open flames and sparks of fireworks, could prove to be quite a hazardous situation.

In fact, the National Council On Firework Safety (NCFS) reported an estimated 7,000 injuries caused by fireworks in 2008 alone. That number was an all-time low, and the council credits consumer education on safety as the main contributing factor to the decrease in injuries.

According to ABC News 7, one firework retailer in Dublin, California, offers a safety warning to each customer who comes through the purchase line, “We ask them to please stay where it’s legal, we ask them to go to the parks that are designated for firing the fireworks.” Firing from an open area, like a park, can greatly reduce the risk of house and forest fires as hot ashes from the fireworks descend.

The NCFS also suggests that after each firing device has burned out, it should be placed under a watering hose or bucket of water to ensure it is fully extinguished.

The California Fire and Burn Injury Attorneys with Berg Injury Lawyers hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July Celebration.
